The intervention program started in Sarathi to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDs among men having sex with men and transgender community (MSM/TG). It had been initiated in the year of 2007 – during NACO phase III with the help, joint effort and collaboration of Avert society Mumbai and Maharashtra states AIDS control society, Mumbai.

a) Primary Target Group: - The PTG for the project was MSM. The Sarathi Trust classified it into different categories i.e. Kothi, Panthi, Double-decker and Transgender. The risk behavior find out through the various process like anal sex, multiple partners and the following issues
 
  • In the society MSM behavior is stigmatized and there is a huge discrimination from mainstream society. In addition, there is multiple stigma attached being MSM and HIV positive.
  • Sex and sexuality not openly discussed due to our cultural values.
  • There is Lack of social support and low access to health services and mental support.
  • Secondary Target Group: - Secondary target group in this project includes pan shop owners, auto drivers, barbers, gatekeepers. This group help in operating condom outlets, distribution of IEC material and condom. It also helps in estimating the number of MSM/TG visiting respective sites and to identify space for no man condom outlets.

Referral and Linkages: - The Sarathi Trust has been Referring MSM/TG for STI (Sexually transmitted infections) and ICTC (Integrated counseling and testing center) Services to the government services delivery system, the government service delivery system has been referring MSM identified person to Sarathi Trust. To Track the process of referrals F- forms were used and to ensure that services are availed by the respective person. PLHIV identify are further referred to Sanjeevan bahuddeshiya sanstha a DIC (Drop in Center) run by network of positive people. PLHIVs were also referring to EFICOR for nutritional support.
   
Condom promotion: - Demo and Re-demo is given by the Counselor, ORW (Outreach Worker) and The Peer Educator on the field and during counseling session to ensure the correct and constant use of the condom by Community. To make sure that condoms use by the community during each sexual contact condoms distributed by the peer educators (Hand to Hand) and the through outlets.

However, In Nagpur when project initiated first time, condom was not easily available. During this time, condoms procured from humsafar Trust along with some lubricants. During second year, condom were procured from avert society and from third year condom were also procured from district AIDS prevention control unit (DAPCU)
   
Advocacy and Enabling Environment: - Many advocacy and events where done with the media and the police which helped to gather supports for MSM/TG community in Nagpur. The Advocacy done is mention above…

  Forums: - The Sarathi Trust is a member of INFOSEM (Integrated network for sexual minorities). This is a national forum, which has been playing a large role in national advocacy, policymaking issues of MSMs/ TGs in India. Sarathi Trust has been part of following e-forums and has been contributing to various discussion initiated in this e-forum;
